We’re back to the more traditional rock concert setting of the San Rafael horse trotting track(?) so there’ll be no tomfoolery in the hotel pool tonight, however there are some ponds lurking in the centre of the track - Anyway we’ll see what happens tonight…
I’ve listened to this highly respected band on the stereo in the car on the way to the gig, but couldn’t sing along to any of the tracks. Then I’ve had to park miles from the entrance and fallen over a cactus in the dark trying to take a short cut in case I’m late.
“This band had better be good” I’m thinking, as I pluck cactus spikes from my palm and negotiate the guest list queue. There are no other queues, it’s just those who don’t pay that turn up late and make it difficult to get in just as the band are about to hit the stage.
I hit the bar and immediately cheer up. Almost immediately it becomes obvious that his band are different again. This isn’t a night of anthems or rap, instead the sound rings many bells inviting comparisons with a spectrum of influences from Status Quo to Led Zep and any number of others in between for good measure.
Formed in Liverpool in 2001, they’ve been around a while, but stand alone amongst the acts we’ve seen this year by delving back into a different period of music pre-dating most of this year’s acts and pulling it off in style.
They also have the advantage of Abi Harding front of stage with her saxophone. This enhances the band’s sound, as do her vocals, and she’s a lot nicer to look at than the blokes with their axes…
Dave McCabe, lead songwriter, introduced one song early on by getting the audience to vote on whether the rock chicks with the inflatable guitars on the podium were getting paid. All voted an enthusiastic yes. He counter-pointed this at the end of the set by informing us all that the band had to stop now because all of the rest of their material was shit. The crowd roared and the band played on.
Having seen them, listening to the tunes in the car on the way home it all started to make sense. I just had to leap backwards and forwards a couple of decades for each new track.
I’m still playing them in the car now and becoming more and more fond…

After smashing it up at Ibiza Rocks in July Dizzee Rascal will be back on Ibiza for Manumission’s Coney Island Review at Amnesia on Friday 5th August 2008.
Never ones to shy away from a good old bump and grind, the folks behind Ibiza’s most flamboyant night out: MIKE & CLAIRE MANUMISSION and their very extended family thought it most appropriate that Britain’s Dizzee Rascal add the icing on the cake to the Manumission Masquerade Ball this Friday in Amnesia.
Now it’s Dizzee’s Showtime on the Manumission Terrace. Wear a mask and get ready for more mayhem at Amnesia, Ibiza. The Rascal will perform a 45 minute live show, starting at 02.30am.
The Soundtrack… will be lovingly provided not only Live & Direct from Dizzee Rascal, Newham Generals and Paco Fernandez but also by this fine team of hand picked music maestros: Lottie, Jon Carter, Fred Falke and Griff.
The Culture Fest… A heady combination of music, art, fashion, performance, dance, beauty, glamour and fabulousness, all brought together with pure Manumission passion.
The Show and its Cast… coming to life on the Manumission Terrace throughout the night, a spectacular stage show with a cast including Johnny Golden, Antonio Culebras, Polly Fey, The Manumission maidens and the Dynamite Hosts.
We were really impressed with the Zutons. There was some discussion afterwards about who they were like - the great thing was that we couldn’t agree - which means you can’t pigeon-hole them. Bluesy, guitar driven indie rock ish… Lot’s of fun and arguably the best gig, music wise, of the year… We hope they come back next year.
As ever, click on images for larger versions (we’ve done bigger versions this time).
I think whoever was dj’ing got it spot on: “say thanks to the co-headliners The Black Kids”. They could’ve headlined Ibiza Rocks in their own right. Great band.
I’d heard them on nme radio but hadn´t made the connection - they were so refreshing
at the moment i’m going through the 5/600 photos but i liked this one so ive stopped and put it into photoshop and uploaded it and bothered to blog about it
more to come…
i’m not on the zutons photos yet - (they were great - probably the best yet)
Late this afternoon Pena Deportiva (Santa Eulalia) played FC Barcelona’s ‘B’ team in their first game of the season.
The cameraman got his blagging hat on and played the press card and managed to escape paying the 15 euro entry… He was rewarded however at half-time when the sprinklers decided to spray the entire terrace of people milling around in front of the bar, he just managed to turn away in time to protect the camera but got soaked in the process. Then to top it off the bar ran out of beer.
We thought Barca had taken the lead just before half time, however the goal was ruled out for offside. The coach Luis Ezcacho must have given the Deportivo players the ‘hair-dryer’ treatment at half time as the second half they looked much the better side with much more possession and more threatening attacks. We wish we could say who scored the Pena winning goal but we haven’t clue. (ed: after reading the local paper this morning it was the subsitute Tino).
We will definitely be attending more games and it will be all the more interesting as SD Eivissa and Pena Deportiva (Ibiza Town and Santa Eulalia) are both in the same division this year.
On a side note there was a great article in the Sunday Times today about Toni Lima who is the Technical Director of SD Eivissa. He also plays in Andorra’s international side - who are up against England in a world cup qialifier on 6th September. At Andorra’s last meeting against England in March 2007 he asked Wayne Rooney if he would sign for SD Eivissa…

the kids then get interviewd by local TV: IB3 (which was showing it live)
The Late Breakfast Club is moving to Es Vive Hotel, Ibiza as from next Sunday for the whole of September.
The LIVE show broadcast through Sonica Radio between midday and 4pm will continue with an abundance of celebrity interviews, international guest DJ’s and of course Jonathan Sa Trinxa with his legendary chill out.
Whilst we obviously cannot condone P2P networks that allow the distribution of copyrighted material we were definitely surprised to see tomorrow evenings game of Santa Eulalia vs Barcelona’s B team appear on a P2P tv site. (IB3 is the local free TV station so we think its ok).
They have the date wrong though - the game is tomorrow.
