On Saturday 15th December, 2007, the international community living in Ibiza will participate in a Global Campaign that will create awareness and show support for the people in Burma.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support that local business and individual people have offered so that this event on Saturday will be a success” said Georgina Withers, events organiser. “The terrible events where monks and innocent people were gunned down by the military junta last month were seen by many people living in Ibiza whilst watching the news in their living rooms. The violence and cruel response demanded a response” she said.

As part of the Global Campaign and the week of International Human Rights Day, the people of Ibiza are invited to join in an inspirational event on Saturday 15th December at Gala Night in support of the people of Burma and to raise awareness of the terrible situation in the country.

The event looks set to be an amazing day out, starting from 2pm entry is free and there will be live performances from Paco Fernandez and Miko and You. People of all ages are welcome, with face painting for children, fabulous raffles and prizes, music, drinks and much more.

The Global Panties campaign is also going to be present. Women from all over the world are joining as should the women in Ibiza. Ladies of Ibiza are invited to come along to the event and participate in the worldwide action of “posting their panties” in a show of uniting against the military regime in Burma. The Burmese military believe that touching female underwear leads to a reduction in their power and therefore women are being encouraged to post their panties to Burmese Embassies worldwide. Addresses of Burmese Embassies around the world will be available. Pre-addressed stickers will be available for females of all ages to join in with this action.

“The people of Burma are suppressed by one of the most cruel military dictatorships in the world which keeps them in poverty and has placed anyone who speaks out for good and democracy under long-term arrest. In the meantime the country is being ransacked by the military with land destroyed and mass deforestation being widespread. Recently a group of Buddhist monks in Burma agreed they would no longer accept food from the military in peaceful protest at their treatment of the country and its inhabitants. These monks were arrested and subjected to immense cruelty” said Withers.

“The Burma Awareness Day is a unique opportunity for the people of Ibiza to take action, however small, against the cruelty and devastation that is taking place in Burma today. It is our chance to show that we will not forget the brave Burmese people who are truly in a desperate situation. Please do come along and show your support at what will be a great day out for all the family.”

This afternoon we went to visit the new paintball site down at the old zoo at Gala Night. Full report is on the main site in the activities section, but its not your average “paintball in a wood” type setting - complete with 4000 sandbags, camouflage netting, a truck, numerous tents, bunkers and levels its great.
